The importance of Mental Health & what it means to us

As you may be aware, this Thursday (10 October) is World Mental Health Day (WMHD) 2019! The purpose of WMHD is to raise awareness of mental health issues and challenge the stigma surrounding this subject.

A study from Health Assured showed that 62% of boardrooms across the UK say that their number one priority is their staff’s wellbeing and mental health and it has been clear to me that Plus Accounting shares this view.

Plus Accounting recognise the important role each member of the team plays and that’s why we have a dedicated strategy in place for managing our employee’s mental health through our Wellbeing & Culture programme.

The Wellbeing & Culture programme was devised after our Marketing Manager, Vicky King, held meetings with every member of the team about our current wellbeing strategy, giving me and my colleagues the chance to provide some suggestions on what the company could do even better. Following the launch of this programme, we have then had a chance to complete a feedback survey where we could give our opinions and feedback on the initiatives introduced.

The wellbeing programme includes regular team meet ups, massages at work, a walking club and more!

As well as these wellbeing initiatives, the firm also offers staff the chance to have a 121 meeting with our internal wellbeing champions (from our management team) to discuss any personal issues that they might want to talk about.

I believe that creating a staff wellbeing programme provides benefits to not only your staff’s mental health but also to your business. A happy, healthy and valued workforce are more motivated and productive in the workplace and this helps create a positive workplace environment.

You can get involved and support World Mental Health Day by taking part in some of these ideas;

Green ribbon – Show your support for mental health and join the Mental Health Foundation’s movement by ordering a green ribbon badge here. All proceeds go towards finding and addressing the sources of mental health problems.

Tea & talk – Raise funds by hosting a Tea & Talk event in your workplace. Simply get together with a group of colleagues, put the kettle on, invite them to donate to the Mental Health Foundation and start a conversation about mental health. If you are stuck for ideas and need more resources, click here for more information.

Social media – Help raise awareness of WMHD 19 by using the hashtag #worldmentalhealthday on social media and following the WFMH’s social channels here.
